Box Score
Throggs Neck, NY – Junior back-up goalkeeper Sean Pfantzelter (Monroe, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) sent a bullet into the net from about 20 yards out, scoring his first career goal after getting some action in the field on Thursday evening in a 2-0 victory for the Privateers of Maritime College over Purchase College in a non-conference men’s soccer game.

Scoreless through one half, the Privateers rallied after going down a man when a red card was issued, with more than half of the second period left to be played. Pfanzelter’s goal was the ultimate reward for the hard work the Privateer defense was doing to prevent any scoring opportunities for the Panthers. The Privateers then got the insurance goal from freshman midfielder Emilio Andino (Roselle, NJ/Abraham Clark) (Roselle, NJ/Abraham Clark) who tapped in the ball right in front of the net after a perfect pass from freshman midfielder Mayer Nelson (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington). This was Andino’s sixth goal of the season and Nelson’s third assist, second time assisting a goal to Andino.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Kavanaugh (Penfield, NY/Penfield) (Penfield, NY/Penfield) recorded his fourth shutout of the season, making some miraculous saves as the Panthers began to make their charge up one man for a majority of the second half. Kavanaugh would go on to stop nine shots, while the Panthers goalkeeper, junior Bryan Benson (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream Central) finished with 13 saves and gave up two goals.

Today’s win improves the Privateers to 9-6 on the season, the most wins a Maritime Soccer team has had in almost a decade. This Saturday, October 29th, the Maritime men’s soccer team will close out its regular season with a huge conference game against Manhattanville College. If the Privateers are victorious on Saturday, they will have a good chance of taking fourth place in the Skyline and their first post-season play since 1996.
