Throggs Neck, NY – The Maritime College Women’s Soccer team closed out it’s inaugural season with a tough 5-0 defeat to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College on a cold and windy Monday afternoon in Throggs Neck.
At the half, the Privateers only trailed by one goal, but John Jay was able to capitalize on a couple of breakaway goals in the second half and seal the win. Freshman forward Rene Lichtenstein (West Islip, NY/West Islip) scored three of the goals for John Jay, all of which came in the second half. Sophomore defender Rhiannon Burke (Bogalusa, LA/Brookhaven) scored the first and game winning goal of a direct kick just from about 15 yards out. The Bloodhounds goalkeeper, freshman Camille Alexander (East Elmhurst, NY/Newton), recorded her third shutout of the season.
Senior goalkeeper
Kim DiGiulio (Massapequa, NY/Amittyville Memorial) (Massapequa, NY/Amityville), who started in her final collegiate game, finished with 17 saves, raising her season total to 143 saves. DiGiulio was part of an instrumental group that was responsible for creating interest in women’s soccer at Maritime, which ultimately led to it being added a varsity program. She also served as team captain during Maritime’s club season in 2004 and retained that title through this season.
As we look toward next year, the Privateers have only two graduating seniors, leaving a majority of the team able to return in the Fall of 2006. These returning student-athletes, along with a solid recruiting class, will lead this program to bigger and better things in the years to come. Next season, Maritime women’s soccer will take another step forward by joining the Skyline Conference and will be competing against such institutions as Stevens Institute of Technology, Manhattanville College and Farmingdale State University.
