Washington, DC – In front of a crowd of over 2,000 people and a film crew from ESPN, the Privateers came less than quarter shy of ending Gallaudet’s undefeated streak. However, the Bison would walk away with a 35-21 win in a thriller on Saturday October 22nd at Hotchkiss Field in Washington, DC.
The Bison opened up the game with an 84-yard return on the opening kickoff, but that return would be negated by a penalty. This is where the Privateer defense stepped up its game and forced a quick four and out. Leading the Privateers defensive efforts were freshman linebacker
Dawit Goodall (Massapequa, NY/Amittyville) (Massapequa, NY/Amittyville) who finished the day with 7.5 tackles, and senior defensive back
Martin Slanovich (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) who stepped up big intercepting two passes, and also served as the punter as both the first and second string punters were out with injuries.
Freshman running back
Douglas Cion (North Massapequa, NY/St. Anthony's) (North Massapequa, NY/St. Anthony's) took the ball into the end zone from three yards out capping off a 12 play, 45-yard drive that gave Maritime an early 7-0 lead. This was Cion’s first touchdown of the season, who started this week in place of the injured
Donald Toby (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside).
Following a Bison touchdown, the Privateers would have an eight play, 70-yard drive that culminated in a 1-yard touchdown run for freshman back
Greg Campisi (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook). Campisi’s run tied the game up at 14-14 as it would remain heading into the second half.
In the second half, the Privateers would once again gain the advantage when Campisi connected with freshman wide receiver
Nick Tomasulo (Wantaugh, NY/Holy Trinity) (Wantaugh, NY/Holy Trinity) on an 84-yard halfback option pass, ,putting Maritime ahead 21-14 with 6:48 left in the third quarter. However, the Bison would answer back with a 16-yard touchdown pass, evening the score at 21 a piece heading into the fourth quarter.
The battle scene shifted into the fourth quarter with the score tied at 21 and each team getting two chances at scoring. It would be the Bison who were able to take advantage of those chances, scoring two touchdowns and their defense were able to prevent the Privateers from retaliating.
Overall, it was a solid day for the Privateers against a solid football club. The Maritime offense finished with 353 yards total yards, out gaining the Bison’s 342 yards. Sophomore quarterback
Zach Townsend (Corning, NY/Corning East) (Corning, NY/Corning East) finished with 169-yards rushing while Campisi led the team in passing with 84-yards.
Head Coach
Clayton Kendrick-Holmes had this to say following Saturday’s game, “We have improved so much as a team, so it is disappointing not to get a win. Gallaudet is a very good team and they deserve to be undefeated.”
“As a whole, I’m pleased with the way the offense played because, for the first time, we were able to put together sustained drives and control the clock. We only turned the ball over once, which was amazing considering how poor the field and weather conditions were.”
“Again, I’m proud of the way we played as a team and continue to show improvement.”
In a schedule change that was made last week, the Privateers will now head to Staten Island on Sunday October 30th to take on Wagner College’s JV team. Originally, the Privateers were set to face off against the Fordham University JV squad this Friday, but Fordham was forced to cancel. Kickoff on Sunday is set for 1pm.
