Mayer Nelson (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) netted his first career hat trick as the Privateers of Maritime College defeated the Cyclones of Centenary College in a key Skyline Conference match-up Wednesday evening in Throggs Neck.
It didn’t take long for the Privateers to get on the scoreboard in this one, as sophomore forward Gohkan Civkaroglu (Aydin, Turkey/Anatolitian) scored his second goal of the season only 57 seconds into the game. Civkaroglu’s goal was followed up by three from Nelson, two of which came in the first half. Nelson’s first goal was on a clean breakaway, his second came off of a direct kick, and his final goal just tipped off of the Cyclone goalkeeper’s fingers to fall into the net.

Steve Bodei (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown). However, their celebration did not last long as the Privateers answered back with two goals of it’s own from sophomore forward
Can Karabay (Izmir, Turkey/Avni Akyolisei) (Izmir, Turkey/Avni Akyolisei), giving them a 6-1 lead. These were Karabay’s second and third goals of the season, and Nelson now moves into second in scoring on the team with four goals and two assists on the year.

Matt Kavanaugh (Penfield, NY/Penfield) (Penfield, NY/Penfield) finished the day with seven saves and allowed two goals. Cyclone goalkeeper, sophomore John Osorio (Dover, NJ/Dover) had 12 saves and gave up four goals, while his backup,
Donnie Iudica (Dingmans Ferry, PA/St. Peter’s), had two saves and two goals against in 26 minutes of play.
This has been a great season for the Maritime Men’s Soccer team who with today’s win, improve to 8-4 on the year and 4-3 in the Skyline Conference, moving them into a tie for third place with Manhattanville College. Next, the Privateers will travel to Patchogue, NY on Saturday October 22nd to go head-to-head with the Golden Eagles of Saint Joseph’s College in another key Skyline Conference game. They will then return home next week for two non-conference games before closing out the regular season on Saturday October 29th against Manhattanville.
