Box Score Throggs Neck, NY – Sophomore midfielder David Poulnot (Sullivans Island, SC/Bishop England) scored the only goal of the game to lift the number one seeded Merchant Marine Academy over the number two seeded Privateers of Maritime College, 1-0 in men’s soccer Skyline Conference action Tuesday evening.
The Privateers played a great game against the conference’s top team, holding them scoreless through out the first half and most of the second. Poulnot’s goal was scored at 74:57 total time as he took a shot from the side that got past the Maritime goalkeeper who had came out in an attempt to snatch the ball before the shot was taken. It was a risky move for the Maritime goalkeeper, and one that paid off for the Mariners.
However, with around twenty minutes remaining in the game, the Privateers continued to fight hard to make plays at the goal. Freshman defender Patrick O’Connor (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley), shifted into the forward position towards the end of the period and had some clean shots at the goal, but was just unable to get one past the Kings Point keeper.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Matt Kavanaugh (Penfield, NY/Penfield) (Penfield, NY/Penfield) played a strong game, stopping eight shots and also got a lot of help from his defenders. Junior sweeper
Richard Tejeda (White Plains, NY/White Plains) (White Plains, NY/White Plains) has continued to be a huge force in protecting the goal, stopping many shots before they even reach
Kavanaugh. Junior goalkeeper
Joseph Halverson (San Antonio, TX/WH Taft) recorded the shutout for the Mariners, he finished with seven saves after facing nine shots.
The Privateers will get a nice break until they play again on Monday, October 17th when they host Brooklyn College in the first ever night soccer game at Maritime. That will be a non-conference match up and is scheduled to begin at 8pm.
