Box Score
Throggs Neck, NY – Sophomore midfielder Waylon Lunn (Canaseraga, NY/Canaseraga) (Canaseraga, NY/Canaseraga) scored the golden goal in the second overtime period to lead the Privateer Men’s Soccer team to their biggest win of the season, 3-2, over the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent in a huge Skyline Conference match on Saturday afternoon in Throggs Neck.

The first half was all Mount Saint Vincent, as they blanked the Privateers on the scoreboard, and netted a big first goal when junior midfielder Chris Herrera (Flushing, NY/St. Francis Prep) knocked in a shot that rebounded off of the Privateer goalkeeper’s hands.

Maritime would answer back in the second half when senior midfielder Anuar Romero (Roselle, NJ/Roselle) (Roselle, NJ/Roselle) netted a goal to tie things up at one. Then just over a minute later, the Privateers took the lead after freshman midfielder Emilio Andino (Roselle, NJ/Abraham Clark) (Roselle, NJ/Abraham Clark) once again headed a shot into the net off a great pass from sophomore forward Can Karabay (Izmir, Turkey/Avni Akyolisei) (Izmir, Turkey/Avni Akol-Lisesi). This was Andino’s third goal of the season and second header goal this week.

Maritime seemingly had the game in the bag, that was until Dolphin sophomore midfielder Eric DiFulvio (Queens, NY/Holy Cross) popped a shot over sophomore goalkeeper Sean Pfanzelter (Monroe, NY/Monroe-Woodbury)'s (Monroe, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) hands to force overtime. The game carried on until Lunn's goal, which was the second of his career.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Kavanaugh (Penfield, NY/Penfield) (Penfield, NY/Penfield) played a great first half allowing only one goal and picking up four saves. However, an injury he sustained in the first half, forced Kavanaugh to sit out the second half. In his absence, back up goalkeeper Sean Pfanzelter (Monroe, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) had some incredible saves as he would go on to finish the half with seven saves. As the game shifted into overtime, the decision was made to put Kavanaugh back in net. This decision would not come back to haunt the Privateers as Kavanaugh stopped two shots and did not allow the Dolphins a chance at a game winning goal. It was an overall great performance by both Maritime goalkeepers combining for 13 saves and only allowing two goals.

Although the Dolphins goalkeeper allowed three goals today, junior Martino Cecere Jr. (Rye Brook, NY/Blind Brook) had an outstanding game, stopping 11 of the 21 shots he faced.

Today’s victory puts the Privateer Men’s Soccer team back above .500 standing at 4-3 and 2-2 in the Skyline Conference. There could not be a better way to open up the first of the month, than with a huge conference win that now pushes Maritime into a four-way tie for third place in the Skyline.

The next challenge for this program will be on Tuesday when they host the Blue Knights of Mount Saint Mary who are currently 2-0 in the Skyline Conference after defeating Saint Joseph’s 1-0 earlier in the week. So be sure to come out and support your Privateers this Tuesday, October 4th at 4pm (16:00) as they look to continue their win streak against a conference foe.
