THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 24, 2014) – The Maritime Athletic Department held its annual Athletic Award Banquet on Thursday evening in Vander Clute Hall on the Maritime College Campus. The department celebrated the achievements both academically and athletically of all its 300-plus student-athletes and recognized several outstanding student-athletes and key contributors to the success of athletics at Maritime.
Female Athlete of the YearAllison Lashmet (DeFreestville, N.Y./Columbia)Lashmet was a three-year member of the rifle team at Maritime in her three seasons, she continuously ranked first or second on the squad at every meet. She was named to the Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference All-Rookie Team in 2011-12 after helping Maritime finish second in the conference with the top score in the Air Gun Sharpshooter title match. In her second year, she helped lead Maritime to a Marksman Division Title in small bore at the MAC Championships with the team's top score.
Before this past 2013-14 season started, she was named the captain of the squad. She set a new program record for a female shooter and was the team's first shooter since 2009 to score a 570 in an air gun match. She again led Maritime to a division title at the MAC Championships, this time in small bore sharpshooter division.
Male Athlete of the YearNick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea)Galli combined for eight seasons at Maritime including a four-year member of both the Privateer baseball team and the ice hockey team. On the baseball team he currently has a career .287 batting average with 121 hits and 60 RBIs and also has 35 stolen bases in 45 attempts. Defensively he has 30 outfield assists including two to preserve Maritime's two no hitters in 2014.
As a top six forward all four of his seasons on the hockey team, he contributed greatly to the Conference Championship and help make a run to the ACHA National Tournament during the 2012-13 season. He has also been a four-year starter for the baseball team and the Privateers have qualified for the Skyline Conference Tournament each of the last three seasons.
Academic Awards
SUNY Chancellor AwardDiogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic)Established in 2004-05, the Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the most selective and prestigious awards bestowed by the State Universitu of New York (SUNY). The award recognizes a combination of academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement. Since that time 21 Maritime student-athletes have been named recipients of the prestigious award that is offered to student-athletes throughout the SUNY System, including the Division I, Division III and NJCAA programs.
Dietrich on the field was named the ECFC Special Teams Player of the Year in the fall while setting a new single-season record for first goal percentage (75.0%) as he converted on nine of his 12 attempts on the season. In the classroom, Dietrich has a 3.09 Grade Point Average through the Fall 2013 semester as he majors in Facilities Engineering at Maritime.Chi Alpha Sigma InducteesFirst-Year RecipientsRyan Alsdorf - Baseball
