THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Aug. 13, 2010) – The SUNY Maritime College varsity men's and women's cross country team released its 2010 schedule Friday morning. The schedule has four meets at Van Corlandt Park, including the Skyline Conference Championships, which will be held on Sunday, October 31.
The Men's team returns four of its five all-conference runners from last year's squad. Sophomores Sam Rainard (Wheaton, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) (Wheaton, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel), Luke Milano (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), Gabriel Rosa (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial), and Matt Taraboletti (Titusville, Fla./Astronaut) will spearhead a team that finished a close second to Farmingdale State in last fall's Skyline championship. Junior captain Tom Moskowitz (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), sophomores Pat Evans (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) (Saint James, N.Y. / Smithtown East), Kevin Regan (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills) (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills), and Mike Paturas (Malverne, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), junior Eddie Albrecht (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville), and seniors Matt Berntson (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) and Leonard Efros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln) (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln) also figure to contribute significantly to the Privateer's success.
“I am excited about this year's team,” commented men's head coach Jim Driscoll. “The men of Maritime finished a close second in the conference last year with our top four all being freshmen. Unfortunately, we did lose three solid seniors and the other top teams in our conference return most of their runners. It will certainly be another great conference meet again this year. We'll soon see who ran over the summer and reports in running shape.”
On the women's side, all-conference senior runner Laura Wasson (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Sacred Heart) leads a team that finished fifth out of ten teams in last season's conference meet. Women's head coach Jennifer DiGaetano will once again be at the helm of the women's team. Senior Danielle Roberts (Candor, N.Y./Candor) and junior Alexandra Carela (Paterson, N.J./Wayne), along with a host of incoming freshmen, look to be an improved team.
