THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 29, 2010) – The Maritime co-ed sailing team was ranked No. 17 in the nation in the latest bi-weekly coaches poll released by SailingWorld.com on Wednesday. 21 coaches submitted votes for the poll. This comes after a spectacular two weeks on the water for the Privateers.

Maritime had its best weekend of the entire year April 17-18, sailing well enough at the conference championships at Cornell to qualify for the semifinals. The squad also won a lower-tier event held at Hobart/William Smith. The Privateers' performance at Cornell was particularly impressive, as they had the top 18 teams in the Mid-Atlantic Conference fighting for eight spots to the semis.

The team was expected to be in contention in the 6th-8th place range, but the sailors put on a show and finished a very strong third. The only teams that finished better than Maritime were St. Mary's and Georgetown (ranked No. 2 and No. 3 nationally), while the Privateers finished ahead of four teams in the top 20.

The Maritime sailing team returns to the waters this coming weekend, May 1-2, when the squad travels to Seattle, Wash., to take part in the ICSA National Semifinals. 18 teams will take part in the event, with the top 9 moving on to the National Finals in Wisconsin later in May.
