THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 20, 2010) – The Maritime hockey team defeated arch-rival Kings Point, 5-2, late Saturday night in front of a raucous crowd at the Parkwood Sports Complex in Great Neck, Long Island – less than a mile away from the USMMA campus. The game, which was a scrimmage, was the last action of the season for the Privateers.
Senior Pat Ferrie opened the scoring just over six minutes into the game, silencing the Kings Point cadets crowded along the boards outside of the rink. Ferrie received a pass in front of the net from junior Dylan O'Malley-Joyce (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) and beat the Mariners' goalie high on the stick side. Freshman Taylor Carsch (Hockessin, Del./AI Dupont) picked up the secondary assist. Kings Point thought they had an equalizer with 5:58 to play in the opening period, but the goal was disallowed as a penalty was called against them.
Sophomore Greg Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) put Maritime up 2-0 with a goal with 3:36 remaining in the first period on assists from sophomore Cullen Bozza (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown) and freshman Dylan Tyx. Just 42 seconds later, senior John Sinning (Southold, N.Y./Southold) added an unassisted goal to give Maritime a 3-0 advantage. However, play was halted with 2:54 to play due to a large hole in the ice at the blue line.
After nearly a half-hour delay, the teams returned to the ice and the Mariners found the back of the net just 1:55 into the second to cut the deficit to 3-1. The puck was dumped in by Kings Point and took an odd carom off the end boards and deflected into the net off of Privateer goalie Matt Tatarian. Maritime got into penalty trouble in the middle of the second, as the Mariners had an extended 5-on-3 opportunity, but Tatarian came up with some huge saves to preserve the two-goal lead.
Right after the last Privateer penalty expired, senior Alex Leoutoakos for Maritime scored to make it 4-1 with 11:38 to play in the middle period. The goal came off a 2-on-1 and was assisted by Dolan and Bozza. Kings Point would score with just 13.5 seconds remaining on a slap shot that was slowed by Tatarian's glove, but trickled into the net, sending the teams to the locker rooms with the Privateers leading, 4-2.
Five minutes into the third period, Bozza ripped a slap shot from the far boards into the back of the net off assists from Tyx and sophomore Jesse Wynn (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund's Prep), to put the Privateers ahead, 5-2. Another goal was disallowed for the Mariners, this one deemed to be hit into the net by the hand of a forward, then Maritime held on for the victory.
Seniors Sinning, Ferrie and Leoutsakos each scored in their final game for the Privateers.
