Sailing Takes Second At North #1 This Past Weekend

GENEVA, N.Y. (Sept. 29, 2009) – This past weekend, the Maritime sailing team made up of Shawn Murray (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spaulding), Harry Scott (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), Madeline Fahey, and Will Gallagher traveled up to the Finger Lakes in Upstate to sail in North #1 at Hobart and William Smith College. The squad finished in second place at the event.

On Saturday, there was a strong breeze coming straight down the lake. With large waves and winds hitting 25 knots, the day was called after only 4 races were sailed. Sunday came with winds varying from 5 to 12 knots. There were still considerable waves since the wind was coming straight down the lake. Murray and Fahey struggled early on Sunday in A division, but soon found their groove and finished 2nd in the final three races to finish third overall in A division.

Scott and Gallagher sailed a great regatta in B division, winning two races during the weekend and finishing second in the division. The team took second overall, only losing to district rival Hobart and William Smith College.

This finish qualifies the Privateers for the War Memorial at St. Mary's College in the end of October, which is the district championship for the fall. Even with such a young team, Maritime sailing continues to be one of the top teams in MAISA.
