Maritime had two teams sailing in the Maritime Fall Open Regatta this past weekend. One team consisted of freshmen Tyler Steel (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island), Ian Sanderson (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Regional), Dara Kovarsky (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville), Eileen Nash (New Rochelle, N.Y./The Ursuline) and Scott Lubliner (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck). The other team that sailed consisted of sophomores Chris Scott (Southold, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), Kyle Crandall (Caznovia, N.Y./Caznovia), Mike Vermilyea and freshmen Rudy Normann (Wakefield, R.I./Rocky).
On Saturday the wind started off around eight knots and built throughout the afternoon. By the time the last two races rolled around, the breeze was down again, between three and five knots, with a strong current in the river. Tyler Steel (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island), with crews Dara Kovarsky (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Scott Lubliner (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck), sailed in the top five throughout the day, but an over early start in one race pushed them to fifth place in A division. Ian Sanderson (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Regional) and Eileen Nash (New Rochelle, N.Y./The Ursuline) in B division also found themselves in the top of the fleet in most races and finished sixth in their division. As a team, they took sixth overall. Skipper Chris Scott (Southold, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and Kyle Crandall (Caznovia, N.Y./Caznovia) were also plagued by an over early start in race one of A division and finished the day ninth in A division. Rudy Norman and crew Mike Vermilyea were very consistent sailing in the middle of the fleet and ended up with a seventh place finish in B division. Overall this team finished eighth.
The team looks forward to the coming weeks ahead.
