Freshmen sailors Harry Scott (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), Ian Sanderson (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Regional) and Tyler Steel (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) competed in the Laser North #1 Qualifier at Kings Point. The top five finishers from this regatta earned a spot at the MAISA Single-handed Championship in October. On Saturday, the winds varied in strength as the fleet saw anywhere from five to 12 knots of breeze. The Maritime sailors struggled at first, but soon began to sail less like freshmen as the day progressed.
Sunday came with 12 knots of breeze early but eventually died in the last race. Harry Scott (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) sailed better with each passing race and finished eighth overall. Having never sailed a laser before, Tyler Steel (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) spent much of the weekend learning the difference between sailing a laser as opposed to other boats. He pulled it together for the last two races finishing in the top 6 in both. Overall he placed 15th. Ian Sanderson (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Regional) was consistent throughout the regatta and finished 14th.
With such a young team, Maritime sailing hopes to continually improve with each passing weekend.
