12/14/2009 6:10:33 PM

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Dec. 14, 2009) – Maritime junior Caroline Hickey (New Orleans, La./DeLasalle) was named the Skyline Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week, while freshman Leonard Hudson (Freeport, Bahamas/Jack Hayward) earned the conference's men's Swimmer of the Week honor and classmate Benjamin Pearce (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) garnered the Skyline men's swimming Rookie of the Week honor. The accolades come after the women's team split a home tri-meet against conference opponents Old Westbury (a 74-5 win) and St. Joseph's (a 55-39 loss) and the men's team defeated Old Westbury, 120-49, last Tuesday at the Riesenberg Hall Swimming & Diving Facility.

Hickey, a native of New Orleans, La., captured the top spot in two races at the tri-meet. She won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:34.26, five seconds faster than the next swimmer, and then won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:10.41. Hickey was also part of a 200-yard medley relay team that came in second with a time of 2:14.64.

Freeport, Bahamas, native Hudson led off the 200-yard medley relay against Old Westbury with a time of 29.93 in the backstroke. Hudson was the only lead swimmer with a time under 30 seconds as he and his team finished first against Old Westbury with a time of 2:01.37, which was 18 seconds better than the second place team. Hudson then won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:23.59, beating out his closest competitor by 24 seconds.

Pearce, from Warwick, N.Y., won all three events he swam against Old Westbury Tuesday night: touching first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:22.46, then the 100-yard free in 1:00.93, beating out his next closest competitor by almost 6 seconds in the short race, and then capping the night off by leading off the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 26.32, which led to a team-victory in 1:44.49.

The Maritime swimming and diving teams will return to action on January 20, 2010, when they travel to Manhattan to face City-rival Baruch College. First race is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Bearcat's ARC Aquatic Center.
