THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 23, 2009) – The Maritime men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the USMMA Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 21, in Kings Point, N.Y. The event consisted of four Division II teams and two Division III teams. There was no scored kept at the invite, but the Privateers had a good number of individuals and relay teams finish in the top five throughout the day.
Maritime's best finish of the day came in the men's 400 yard IM, where junior-captain Brian Day (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) placed third with a time of 4:51.91. Freshman diver Robert Bunch (Florence, S.C./Camden Military Academy (Mass.)) also finished third after scoring a 105.45 in the men's one meter dive event. The men's 200 yard medley relay team of freshmen Fritz Beyer and Joseph Tucker (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun ) and sophomores Jonathan DaSilva (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Ryan Luchsinger (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) finished in fourth place with a time of 1:46.09. DaSilva, Day, Tucker and Luchsinger later finished in fourth in the men's 400 yard freestyle relay, clocking in at 3:36.01.
On the women's side, the 200 yard medley relay team of junior Caroline Hickey (New Orleans, La./DeLasalle), sophomore Brisa Garrido (Boca Raton, Fla./Chattahoochee), senior Joanne Rydzewski (Floral Park, NY/The Mary Louis Academy) and junior-captain Kyle Kenny (Pearl River, NY/Nanuet) placed fifth with a time of 2:24.08. Kenny, Hickey, Garrido and sophomore Laura Palino (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) later finished fifth in the women's 400 yard freestyle relay.
The Privateers return to the pool Monday night, when they travel to Staten Island to take on CSI. First race is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
