RIVERDALE, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2009) – The Maritime men's cross country team finished as Conference Runner-up at the 2009 Skyline Conference Championships on Sunday at Van Corlandt Park. The harriers finished with 47 points – 13 more than Farmingdale State, who won the meet over nine other Skyline Conference schools – while the women's team completed a successful season with a fifth place finish.

The men were paced by five runners who all earned All-Conference honors: freshmen Sam Rainard (Wheaton, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) (fifth) and Luke Milano (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (seventh) were named to the All-Conference First team. Freshmen Gabriel Rosa (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) (ninth) and Matt Taraboletti (12th), along with senior Gannon O'Brien (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Christian) (14th) were each named to the All-Conference Second Team. Maritime was the only college to have all five of its scorers named All-Conference.

“I could not be more proud of the men of Maritime”, stated men's coach Jim Driscoll. “We ran our best race of the year on the day it counted the most, averaging less than six minutes per mile on a hilly five mile course. To have our top five each make All-Conference, and have the top four all be freshmen, is truly a great accomplishment. The men ran hundreds of miles since school started, often twice a day, and they deserve the runner-up trophy. Farmingdale State is an excellent team full of upperclassmen with lots of collegiate experience and our guys gave them a serious run. The future is very bright for Maritime cross country.”

On the women's side, Maritime finished fifth. The women were led by junior Laura Wasson (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Sacred Heart), who earned All-Conference Second Team by virtue of her 8th place finish. “Laura Wasson (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Sacred Heart) ran one heck of a race”, said first-year women's coach Jennifer DiGaetano. “What a way to finish up an exceptional season. I was so proud of all of the ladies. They ran their hearts out, running up cardiac hill when a lot of the other teams were walking. I am grateful to have such a great group of ladies and so excited for them scoring fifth in their inaugural season.”

Maritime was also the host college for this year's championships and 20 Maritime student-volunteers and the Privateer mascot helped make the meet a resounding success. “There were many compliments about the Maritime students and their role in making this meet such a success”, said Driscoll. “Maritime's reputation was greatly enhanced today, not only by the accomplishments of our runners, but by the performance of our students who gave up their Halloween Sunday to help out.”

The men's team will conclude the 2009 season when they travel to Letchworth State Park along the Genesee River in Western New York to compete in the NCAA Regional championship on Saturday, November 14.
