THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 6, 2009) – The Skyline Conference announced on Monday that Maritime men's soccer senior James Salka, women's soccer freshman Courtney Marietta and volleyball sophomore Natalie Jackson have been named to their respective sports weekly honor rolls.
Washingtonville, N.Y., native Salka scored the Privateers' lone goal of the week in a 2-1 loss to the College of Staten Island last Monday. Maritime went on to lose its next two games, both by 1-0 scores, to conference opponents Farmingdale State and Mount Saint Mary. The men's soccer team currently sits at 6-4 overall (1-2 Skyline) on the season.
Sophomore Jason Tursi currently ranks third in the Skyline with 0.50 assists per game, while classmate Tom Federico ranks fifth in the same category with 0.40 assists per game and is tied for eighth with 1.20 points per game. Sophomore Cesur Alagoz ranks seventh in the conference in points per game (1.30) and assists per game (0.30) and is tied for eighth in the Skyline with 0.50 goals per game, while sophomore John Blunden ranks third with 0.30 game-winning goals per game, fifth with 0.60 goals per game and is tied for eighth with 1.20 points per game.
In goal, junior Harris Papson ranks second in the Skyline with a 0.91 goals against average and is fourth with a .805 save percentage. As a team, the Privateers rank second in both scoring offense (2.60 goals per game) and scoring defense (1.00 goals allowed per game).
Grantville, Pa., native Marietta stopped a combined 17 shots in the Privateers' two losses to Farmingdale State and Mount Saint Mary last week and stood tall during numerous breakaway opportunities by both teams. The freshman also got her hand on the ball to break up many crosses and outhustled many of the opponents' forwards to beat them to the ball and clear it. The women's soccer team is 6-5 overall and 1-3 in Skyline action.
Marietta ranks first in the Skyline Conference with four shutouts and her 0.36 shutouts per game are good for second in the league. Freshman Jorrie Trenkamp currently leads all Skyline players with 2.70 points per game and 0.40 game-winning goals per game and her 1.10 goals per game and 0.50 assists per game rank second and fourth in the conference, respectively. Junior Christina George ranks second in the Skyline with 0.64 assists per game, while classmate Murray ranks seventh with 1.82 points per game and 0.82 goals per game. Freshman Meghan Burke sits tied for fourth in the conference with 0.18 game-winning goals per game and is eighth with 0.64 goals per game and tenth with 1.45 points per game. As a team, Maritime leads all conference programs offensively with 3.82 goals per game.
Stockton, Calif., native Jackson had a fantastic week for the Privateers volleyball team, nearly recording a triple double with nine kills, 13 assists and 11 digs to go along with five aces and a .529 hitting percentage in a 3-1 loss to Lehman on Thursday, before finally registering her first triple-double of the season on Sunday at home against Bard. Jackson recorded 15 kills, 23 assists and 15 digs, and once again had five service aces, in the 3-1 loss to the Raptors. The volleyball team is currently 3-7 overall (0-3 Skyline).
Jackson ranks fourth in the Skyline with a .293 hitting percentage and 0.64 service aces per set, while sitting eighth amounts all conference setters with 3.92 assists per set. Senior Marissa Danzy ranks third in the conference with 0.78 blocks per set and is ninth with a .203 hitting percentage. As a team, the Privateers are third in the Skyline with 1.20 blocks per set.
All three teams are back in action tonight, as the women's soccer team takes to the road to face conference-foe St. Joseph's-LI at 4 p.m. at Diamond in the Pines Park in Patchogue. The volleyball team is also away at the College of Staten Island; first serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. The men's soccer team will be home tonight against St. Joseph's-LI at 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
