THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct, 13, 2009) – This past weekend, the Maritime sailing team competed in the Moody Trophy at the University of Rhode Island, the Hobart/William Smith Fall Intersectional up in Geneva, N.Y. and the Colgate Open.

The Moody Trophy was the top co-ed intersectional of the weekend and a good place for the young Maritime team to test itself against the country's best. Sailing for the Privateers in A division were Shawn Murray (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spaulding) and Maddie Fahey, who finished 14th in the group. In B division, Harry Scott (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and Will Gallagher finished 8th to place Maritime in 10th overall.

The Hobart/William Smith Fall Intersectional was a good opportunity for Maritime to compete at a high-level regatta and sailors Tyler Steel (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island), Kyle Ondrey (Manhasset, N.Y./St. Mary's), Ian Sanderson (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Regional), and Leigh Ann Ferrari made the most of the experience. The shifty conditions at HWS required a big adjustment from the Maritime sailors, who improved with every set of races. By the end of the event on Sunday, the team was putting together its best races and was consistently finishing at or near the top 10. Maritime finished up in 12th place overall, right behind St. Mary's College of Maryland.

The final event for Maritime this weekend was the Colgate Open Regatta, where the Privateers were represented by Chris Scott (Southold, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), Kyle Crandall (Caznovia, N.Y./Caznovia), Scott Lubliner (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck), and Chris Palmieri (Babylon, N.Y./St. John the Baptist). The team sailed very well both days of the event, finishing in second place overall. Led by a convincing win in B division by Lubliner and Palmieri, the Privateers beat host Colgate in a tie-breaker for second place.

The sailing team returns to the water this coming weekend when the squads will travel to the Navy Fall Regatta in Annapolis, Md., the North Fall #2 hosted by Cornell, and the Greater N.Y. Area Dinghy Regatta hosted by Fordham.
