PHILADELPHIA- PA (April 19, 2008): The Privateer Men's Team traveled to the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania early this morning to participate in the Kerr Cup sponsored by Drexel University. The Kerr Cup is the Colonial Athletic Association Championship's and Coach Rick Smith wanted to get his men fast competition to gauge their performance and improvement to date. The team was to compete in the Men's Novice four, Novice eight and Varsity four events.
The Men's Novice four, lead by stroke and team MVP Justin Alsdorf, and consisting of Russell Stuebe, Mike Marone, Ricky Damiano and coxswain Dana Rauch placed 2nd overall in their event, but more importantly bettered their 2000 meter time by nearly 20 seconds, and closed the gap on their national competition significantly. The Men's Novice lightweight four – stroke Josef Kasprzycki, Matt Berntson, Tavaris Adderley, Zachary Lemite and coxswain Moira Kelly came in 4th place in the same race, 19 seconds behind the Maritime heavyweight crew. The Men's varsity four came in 4th place, 9 seconds behind the first place crew. Participating schools at the Kerr Cup included Drexel University, George Mason University, Old DominionUniversity, University of Delaware, William & Mary, Virginia Commonwealth University, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, LaSalle University, Bucknell and West Point. Maritime Crew will be at Orchard Beach this upcoming weekend to participate in the Metropolitan Championships. Coach Smith and Assistant Coach Kevin Health are hoping to recapture both the Veiga and Lynch Trophy for wins in the Men's Novice four and eight events.
