Throggs Neck, NY – The Maritime College men’s crew varsity four boat had a solid showing this past weekend, competing at the last event of the season, the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, PA.
Teams from 54 schools, including Dowling, Temple, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Purdue, San Diego, Pittsburgh and Dayton, competed in the men’s varsity four. In the first heat on Friday, the Privateers just pulled ahead of Amherst to earn themselves a 16 second lead and a first place finish with a time of 6:55.27. The first place finish guaranteed them a spot to compete in the semi-finals on the following day. Members of the Maritime varsity four for the Dad Vail were sophomores
Zachary Comer (East Rockaway, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) (East Rockaway, NY),
David McCleary (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) (Bay Shore, NY), and
James Neumann (Islip, NY/Islip) (Islip, NY), junior
Connor Leahy (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills) (Burnt Hills, NY) and the coxswain sophomore
Kelly Fitzpatrick (Annapolis, MD/Mount de Sales) (Annapolis, MD).
On Saturday, after suffering some substantial damage to their shell, the Privateers were forced to use a loaner shell from Vespoli for the semi-finals. Rowing in the shell for the first time, the team managed to finish the race with their best time of the year, 6:35.35. However, the finish would put them in third place, just shy of making a run at the finals. Still, it was a good event for the team, and gives them plenty to build off of heading into next year.
