THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 29, 2013) – The Maritime men's and women's crew team wrapped up racing at the Mid Atlantic Rowing Conference Championship Regatta at Gifford Pinchot State Park in Lewisberry, Pa. this past weekend and had a number of great finishes. The regatta was attended by Washington College, Marietta, Franklin and Marshall, Scranton, Richard Stockton University, University of Mary Washington, Susquehanna, St. Mary's, University of Maryland, Rutgers-Camden, Technical College of New Jersey and Bryn Mawr. Conditions were near perfect with light breezes, and no current.
The Maritime Men's Novice 4 – Stroke freshman
John Howe (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga) (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga), 3-seat freshman
Brian Sweeney (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor), 2-seat
Joe Prevete (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Newfield) (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Newfield) and bowman freshman
Andrew Merz (Mathews, Va./Mathews) coxswained by senior
Shang Yang (Taipei, Taiwan/Hanover Park) continued an almost near perfect season with a first-place finish in a time of 7:09.2, beating the next crew by over 13 seconds. This guarantees the crew a good lane assignment at the Dad Vail National Regatta in Philadelphia in two weeks. They also will be looking strong for the New York State Championship's to be held next weekend up at Whitney Point, N.Y.
The Men's Varsity 4 – Stroke senior
Tyler Ferris (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park), 3-seat junior
Matt Thomas (Mathews, Va./Mathews) (Mathews, Va./Mathews), 2-seat sophomore
Devon Toscano (Millbrook, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes ) (Millbrook, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and bowman senior
Brendan O'Connor (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown North ) (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown North) coxswained by freshman
James Hayes (Staten Island, N.Y./LaGuardia) (Staten Island, N.Y./LaGuardia) also took first in their event final and put in their best performance of the season to date. This was a critical race which will have good effect on their Dad Vail National bid. Their winning time of 6:53.4 also was impressive, beating second place Washington College by a mere .5 second, and third place crew from University of Mary Washington by .8 seconds.
The Men's Novice 8 - stroke

Mark Nash (Buffalo, N.Y./Nichols School) (Buffalo, N.Y./Nichols School) coxswained by senior Shang Yang won the Novice Men's event with a winning time of 6:50.1. At the Regatta, their race was combined with the Men's Junior Varsity event and the Privateers finished second overall, behind a much more seasoned Junior Varsity Washington College Crew, who pulled a time of 6:40.4.
The Men's Pairs - Maritime "A" Stroke junior
Pete Wojcik (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) and bowman senior team captain
Terrance Cooper (Massapequa Park, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) (Massapequa Park, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and Maritime "B" Stroke
Zach Dietrich (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) and bowman Chris Lazarides finished second and third respectively to a strong Rutgers crew. There was good improvement shown in the "A" boat and this was the first race for Dietrich and Lazarides in this boat this season, so overall it was a good race to get under their belts.
The Privateer Novice Women's 4 – Stroke freshman
La'Quey Smith (Freeport, Bahamas/Tabernacle Baptist Christian Academy) (Freeport, Bahamas/Tabernacle Baptist Christian Academy), 3-seat freshman
Nora McMahon (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), 2-seat freshman

Jenny Chen (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bronx HS of Science) (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bronx HS of Science) coxswained by freshman
Brendan Goehl (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) showed continued significant improvement this week, however failed to advance out of the mornings heats. They posted a time of 8:44.0, and will strive to make up another 15 seconds before States next weekend.
