THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (May 25, 2010) – The Maritime College football team released its 2010 schedule Tuesday morning. The Privateers have a full 10 game schedule with five home contests at Reinhart Field and seven games against Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) foes.
The season kicks off the Thursday night before Labor Day weekend, September 2, with the fourth annual Chowder Bowl against Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The Privateers will host what is expected to be another hard fought battle against the Buccaneers and look to start off the 2010 season on the right foot by retaining the coveted trophy for the fourth-straight year.
Maritime will take to the road the following Friday night, September 10, against a new opponent in Western Connecticut State University. “This is a great game for us as playing a local opponent helps with our travel budget, many of the players are familiar with each other from recruiting and high school days and the crossover game against the New Jersey Athletic Conference opponent may help with sorting out regional rankings,” said head coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes.
Maritime will move to Saturday games and close out the non-conference schedule at home against the Mariners of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in what has been dubbed the “Seafaring Scuffle.” The Privateers blocked a field goal attempt as time expired in 2009 and bested USMMA in overtime, 28-21. With the shared institutional educational missions, student recruiting pool, and similar alumni job placement, industry bragging rights will again be on the line.
ECFC competition will kick off for the Privateers on September 25 against Husson College as that game will also be part of Homecoming Weekend for Maritime College.
October opens with two consecutive road games against Anna Maria University, outside Boston, and Castleton State in Vermont. The Privateers will return home to play Becker College on October 16 – the game will be preceded by a men's soccer game and Football Recruiting Open House. After another trip to Boston to take on Mount Ida College on October 23, the team will return home to face 2009 ECFC Champions and 2010 favorite, Norwich University. The date will be designated “Bronx Warrior Pee Wee Football Day” and the Warriors will take the field prior to the Varsity contest. The regular season will conclude with a Friday evening game against Gallaudet University in Washington, DC on November 6.
Coach Kendrick-Holmes and his staff and players are excited about the prospects of the upcoming season. “Last year's season, and especially the conference race, was fun and rewarding, but ultimately we fell short of our primary goal,” commented Kendrick-Holmes. “I expect this year will be equally exciting with new challenges to overcome and opportunities to take advantage of. The team is hungry to get back on the field and represent Maritime College.”
