THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 2, 2010) – The Maritime sailing team competed in two events this past weekend: the Old Dominion Spring Open in Virginia and the Graham Hall Team Race in Maryland. Below is a recap of each event.

ODU Spring Open:

The Privateers sent five sailors along with head coach Russ O'Reilly to Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. for the first of a series of events in the southern region of the conference. Sailing for Maritime were freshman Taylor Walker and junior Laura Wasson (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Sacred Heart) in A division and freshman Scott Lubliner (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck), sophomore Mike Vermilyea and freshman Morgan Poulos Keating in B division.  The event was a great opportunity for the sailors to get some valuable regatta experience, to shake off the off-season rust, and to enjoy the beautiful weather in the south.  Maritime finished the event in tenth of 18 schools, led by a strong B division performance by Lubliner, Vermilyea, and Poulos Keating who finished seventh in their division.

Graham Hall Team Race:

This weekend Maritime also fielded a team at the Graham Hall Team Race hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. The event was extremely deep with 16 strong teams in attendance and the Privateers struggled early on to come to terms with the aggressive competition. On Saturday, the team finished with a total win-loss record of 4-11 and ended up learning a good number of lessons the hard way. The squad rallied on Sunday to boast a 5-2 record in the second round. Sailing for Maritime were freshmen Tyler Steel (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island), Shawn Murray (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spaulding) and Harry Scott (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), senior Will Gallagher, and juniors Nicki Kelly (Buffalo, N.Y./Nichols), Leigh Ann Ferrari and Maddie Fahey.

The Maritime sailing team returns to action this coming weekend, March 13-14, when the squad takes part in the John Jackson Team Race, hosted by Georgetown University, in Washington, D.C.
