in the bottom of the eighth inning proved to be the difference, as the Maritime baseball team outslugged John Jay, 11-10, in its season-opener Tuesday night at Reinhart Field. With the win, the Privateers begin the 2010 campaign with a 1-0 record – the first time the program has started the year with a victory since the 2005 season - while the Bloodhounds fall to 1-7 overall.

Maritime College freshman Benjamin Pearce won all three events he swam against Old Westbury Tuesday night: touching first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:22.46,
then the 100-yard free in 1:00.93, beating out his next closest competitor by almost 6 seconds in the short race, and then capping the night off by leading off the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 26.32, which led to a team-victory in 1:44.49.

Maritime College junior Caroline Hickey captured the top spot in two races in a meet against Skyline Conference opponents Old Westbury and St. Joseph’s Tuesday night. She won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:34.26, five seconds faster than the next swimmer. She then won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:10.41. Hickey was also part of a 200-yard medley relay team that came in second with a time of 2:14.64.
